Heather’s Habitat Story

Heather was accepted into the homebuyer program in 2016 and spent the next year helping refurbish the home she would purchase. Heather admits that completing the required 250 hours of “sweat equity” wasn’t easy. Between working full time and raising a young son, carving out time was challenging. But she knew she needed a safe and healthy home for her family, in a neighborhood where drugs and violence weren’t a regular occurrence.
Finally, on her birthday in August of 2017, Heather received the keys to her new home. “It was such a relief to finally have a real home,” shared Heather. “My son has special needs and he is doing so much better. When we lived in the apartment, he had asthma attacks all the time — they completely stopped when we moved into our home.”
“I feel like this house saved my life,” she says. “If I had stayed in that apartment, I’m afraid I might have given up the dream of having a better life. Being accepted into the Habitat program came at just the right time.”
