Mrs. Heide Benson recently contacted Island County Habitat to request assistance through our Critical Home Repair Program.
The Critical Home Repair Program through Habitat for Humanity provides assistance to homeowners who are unable to afford the repairs necessary to remain safely and comfortably in their homes. Rather than have to pay for the work in a lump sum, the homeowner agrees to make reasonable, no-interest payments for the needed work, some of which is completed by volunteers.
Like many of our requests, Heide needed help with heating her home and making the entries and exits safe. As you can see from the picture on the left, the back door of her home had no porch or steps, making the home particularly unsafe. This was quickly rectified, and now Heide can feel secure knowing that she can safely use her back door.
Although Heide didn’t request it, construction manager Scott Givens noticed that the ramp to the front entrance was extremely slick and unsafe. The decision was made to also repair the ramp, preventing any future potential falls. You can see Heide standing at the top of her safer ramp in the top picture.
Staying warm in the winter is no longer an issue for Heide. Her new heating system and new, double-paned windows will ensure the home stays comfortable for years to come.
