An autoharp is a string instrument that is part of the zither family. It consists of a series of strings stretched across a resonant body, typically in the shape of a trapezoid or oval. The strings are played by either strumming or plucking them while pressing buttons or keys mounted on a bar (called a chord bar) across the instrument's strings. Pressing a chord bar dampens or mutes certain strings, allowing the player to easily produce chords.
